Preliminary DesignThe process of brick carving/sculpting begins with unfired clay brick. These brick are referred to as "green brick." The green brick are ordered according to the size, color and complexity of each product to be sculpted. For standard depth carvings a typical 4 inch thick brick is sufficient for use. If a design requires more depth a thicker brick can be used. Shaped brick are often used during construction to create a frame or border for the final presentation. SculptingThe green brick are stacked on an easel as they would appear in the final design for the sculpting to begin. Reduction carving is used to remove the excess material revealing the desired shape of each brick in the project. Reduction carving uses a variety of pottery cutting and scraping tools. This process is an art and the time to complete a project is determined by the size and complexity of each design. During the reduction carving the brick must be kept damp to insure that the clay remains workable. Once the sculpting is complete the brick are disassemble, numbered and made ready for the drying and firing process done at the brick manufacturing plant. Firing and DryingOnce the brick have been fired they are returned to our studio where they are dry stacked as they will appear in the final design to verify that all pieces are accounted for. A quality check insures that construction is ready to begin. ConstructionImagine Brick installs our sculpted brick designs locally.
